What are various types of glass bead making methods?
Those who work with beads either for making beads jewelry or for any other craft understand that glass beads are something that can’t be resisted! In fact, there are so many glass beads types that one can easily give wings to his/ her imagination and can find just the right type of glass beads to fit into their project. The credit goes to numerous glass bead making methods and techniques adopted for making glass beads in various forms, shapes, colors, and sizes. Lets analyze the bead making methods of all types of glass beads.
Glass Beads Types & Their Making Processes
Glass beads are divided into many types on the basis of the method used to manipulate and create the glass which is the most important of all glass bead making supplies. The three main glass beads types include wound beads, drawn beads, and molded beads. There are other bead making methods too where two or more processes are combined to make beads such as for making millefiori beads, where cross-sections of a drawn glass cane are applied to a wound glass core. Most of the glass bead types are pressed glass which are mass-produced by preparing a molten batch of glass and pouring it into molds to form the desired shape. Here we explain the various glass bead making methods for some of the most popular glass beads types.
Wound Glass Bead Making: Winding method of glass bead making is the most ancient method. In this process, glass is heated at a very high temperature to make it ductile. Glass at high temperature is then stretched around a solid core like a metal wire or mandrel. The wire is also treated with something to prevent the bead from sticking to it. This is called bead release. While still hot, the wound bead is further shaped with the help of various bead making tools and paddles, by pressing or rolling it on a hard surface like marble -called “marvering”- or by rolling it in a mold. Sometimes the surface of the bead is decorated with fine straws of colored glass while it is still hot. These are then known as lampwork glass beads.
Drawn Glass Beads Making: There are many methods for making drawn beads which involve pulling a strand out of a gather of molten glass in such a way that it incorporates a bubble in the center to serve as the hole in the bead. Sometimes a hollow metal tube is inserted into the ball of hot glass and the glass strand is pulled out around it to form a continuous glass tube. For making Venetian glass beads, molten glass was gathered on the end of a tool called a puntile and a bubble was incorporated into the center of the gather of molten glass. Then a second puntile was attached before stretching the gather with its internal bubble into a long cane to lengths up to 200 feet long. This drawn glass tube was then chopped for making individual drawn beads. These beads were cooked or rolled in hot sand to round the edges without melting the holes closed.
Molded Glass Bead Making: Molten glass beads were originally made in the Czech republic (Bohemia.) In this process, thick glass rods of about 20 cm are heated to melt and to feed into a device that stamps the glass, including a needle that pierces a hole. The beads thus made are rolled in hot sand to remove flashing and soften seam lines. One ‘feed’ of a hot rod might give around 10 – 20 beads, and a single operator can make thousands of such molten glass beads in a day.
Faceted Glass Bead Making: For making faceted glass beads, the glass batch is first poured into bead molds and then they are faceted with the help of a grinding wheel. Beads are then poured onto a tray and reheated for a very short period of time, just long enough to melt the surface. This rules out any minor surface irregularities from the mold. Beads thus made are known as fire polished faceted beads.

Where To Find “Push” Actress Camilla Belle’s African Trade Bead Bracelets That Benefit Charity in Africa
WHO: Camilla Belle, InStyle Magazine July 2009 Issue
WHAT: InStyle July 2009 Issue Featuring Camilla Belle for HELP (Malawi, Africa) wearing
the African Trade Bead Bracelets in the “Where Can I Find” section.
WHEN: July 2009
Fun Facts about Camilla’s Bracelets:
The term “Trade Beads” typically applies to beads made predominately in Venice and Bohemia and other European countries from the late 1400s through to the early 1900s and traded in Africa and the Americas. Many of these beads have been attributed to being made in Germany, France and the Netherlands as well.
The heyday of this “trade” period was from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s when millions of these beads were produced and traded in Africa. The Venetians dominated this market and produced the majority of the beads sold during this time. The J.F. Sick and Co, based in Germany and Holland was one of the largest bead brokers/importers during this period.
The popularity of these beads was revived in the late 1960s when they began to be exported from Africa into the United States and Europe. The term “Trade Beads” became very popular during this time period and is still used for the same bead reference today. The millefiori beads were also called “Love Beads” and used in necklaces with peace symbols during the Hippie days.
As the popularity and availability of these old beads grew they started getting “named”. We started hearing terms like “Russian Blues”, “Dutch Donuts”, “King Beads”. Although some of these folklore names are totally meaningless…ie….”Lewis and Clarke” beads, they do describe a specific type of bead.
And today these beads are more popular and collectable than ever. Thousands of these beads are in private collections around the world. The African Traders are having to go deeper and deeper into Africa to find more of these beads and many styles which were readily available just 5 years ago are no longer seen today.
There are exceptional museum collections of trade beads at the Museum of Mankind in London, the Pitt River Museum in Oxford, the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Belgium, the Murano Museum of Glass in Italy, the Tropical Royal Institute of Amsterdam, the Bead Museum in Arizona, US and the Picard Trade Bead Museum in California, US to name a few.
One of the most intriguing aspects to these beads is how they have survived a hundred or more years of wear and the travel through at least three continents. Another mystery is who wore them before us who will have them next…….after us.

Question by 123: How long will my papier mache sculpture last?
So I made a few papier mache sculptures of African ladies and I used non-acidic paper and tissue, flour and water paste, aluminum foil and wire for the armature, covered the pm in a thin layer of plaster to smooth it out, and I painted over it with acrylics and then sealed it and it also has decorations like glass beads and stone and bone. And I let it dry good at each stage. I like them alot and want them to last for all my life, I’m 16, will they? How long would they last? Is there any way I can make papier mache last longer?
The tissue is non acidic too. Also should I be using something different than flour and water to bind it? Something that will last longer if you know? And is aluminum foil bad?

Answer by Debonair
I’ve just recently given away a mask that I made about ten+ years ago. I used news paper and corrugated cardboard to construct the mask, both with high acid pH. The inside and outside were both coated with acrylic paint. And for the most part the mask is in fairly good condition only suffering from being handled over time. Besides acid levels in the paper probably the biggest concerns would be moisture and insects. Aluminum foil should not be of any concern. I also have a small dinosaur that someone gave to me probably close to being twenty years old that was made using solid papier mache in pulp form. It was never painted or sealed with anything, collected dust over the years rarely cleaned and has held up very well. If your sculptures are handled with care I don’t see why they would not last.I hope that you enjoy them for many years to come

How To Use Jewelry Beads
Jewelry beads may not seem like a whole lot by themselves. However, when you string numerous beads together, you can create anything from a strap to a beautiful addition to a handbag and, of course, jewelry that you are proud to wear. There are many products on the market today that can really help you to create something that is one of a kind and that you are thrilled to own. On the other hand, with the right use of beads, you can also create some of the most beautiful pieces that you can turn around and sell.
In many situations, the entire feel and appeal of a piece will stem directly from the beads that you select to use in the creation of the jewelry. If you select a special shape, for example, that will add a bit more elegance and beauty to the finished product as compared to a standard rounded bead. As you take into consideration all of your options, note the effect that the bead will have on the overall finished piece. Does it add to the value or does it just blend in? Make a choice depending on what effect you want the finished piece to offer.
The good news is that you have numerous options available to you. Some of the very finest products available are also highly affordable. On the flip side, you may want that expensive jewelry beads so that they add a bit more value to the finished piece. Take into consideration options such as metal beads or even glass faceted beads. On the other hand, you may want semi precious gemstone beads or you may wish to go with cloisonne beads. These are all options that are readily available to you today, depending on the specific details you are after.
Consider clay beads for a rustic but charming finished piece. Or, if you want more color and more ornate detailing, consider cloisonne beads. These have intricate pictures on the small beads which makes them some of the most desirable in terms of their quality. If your project tends to be much softer and as such, it may require something like crochet beads, which make the entire piece more homey and inviting.
You could go with faceted glass beads if you want something that can blend in well to any style but still offers the glimmer and shine you are interested in. When blending in is not what you are after, consider going with a different jewelry bead, the fashion bead. This type of bead offers something amazing no matter what style you select from or what color combination you choose. With patterns or without, fashion beads are fun.
If you are looking for other options, consider these. Gemstone beads work well for those who wish to add real and traditional value to the overall jewelry piece. You may, on the other hand, be looking for something more elegant and classic such as glass pearls. Metal beads do the exact opposite and offer a very modern look to them, even when they have intricate detailing in place. Nut beads and shell beads are other options and these often give a more natural, earthy feel to the finished jewelry piece. Wood beads offer a similar relationship.
As you can see, there are many jewelry beads out there? Rather, there are numerous options you can select from in various materials, colors and styles. You will find that most of these bead types are available to you highly affordably too, which means you can easily create a beautiful and valuable piece of jewelry without spending a small fortune.
Sandy Winslow writes about topics relating to jewelry making. What you need to know about jewelry beads options is that there are a lot of options!

Question by jamie: How do I find out if the place i am renting is uninhabitable? It’s awful!?
I found this seemingly cute mother-in-law while my husband was away on business and a little over a year later, its become a disaster. Everything seemed fine when I found it, albeit it was extremely old, but it was so quaint and cute, and clean looking, I decided to go for it. Now the tub constantly leaks at the knobs and underneath where the tile is, the front door doesn’t have any seals around it because they have all worn off over time so anything can get in at the bottom/sides including the air outside and bugs/mice. Plus the latch doesn’t work so it constantly blows open unless the deadbolt it locked. Also, we have found some pretty gross dark black mold spanning about 5 feet on the walls in the closet. It’s awful! Just recently we have seen mice running around in the kitchen like they aren’t even scared of us, and can hear them all over in the walls. I know it is infested because we’ve caught 5 in the last month. The thing is, that landlords are so lazy that they won’t fix any of these problems. They continue to say they will, then they wont. Its been 7 months since the problems have risen, and its getting worse. Now the mice are dying in the walls and the place stinks so bad! Plus my husband has taken some electrician courses for his job and says that the place isn’t even to code. The bathroom isn’t grounded and half of the outlets don’t work, and there are wires sticking out in places that we didnt notice until after we moved in. Plus all of the windows and back door are sealed shut and we’ve been told (after signing the contract) not to try to open them. Since everything is only one pane, the cold comes in and chills the whole house. We have one little stove fireplace thing that can barely heat one room. All of the walls inside somehow are retaining moisture and when we put our hands on them, there are little water beads. Some of them are wood paneling so Im scared to think of the mold that might be hiding under there. And the baseboards have started to crack apart, showing us there are miceholes all over. Plus we have seen cockroaches, spiders, and tons of ants.
Now I could’ve been more thorough checking it before agreeing to sign, but the walkthrough seemed find, and I assumed for them to rent, things would have to be kept up or fixed. My husband and i are very clean people, it’s just that all of these things, are things that have happend over a years worth of time and without maintenance (that landlords should be doing) have basically ruined that place.
Now I am wondering if there is any way to prove that it isnt safe, so we can get out of our contract. Whether someone come in and test the mold, or we find documents that show what the electrical coding needs to be. Or anything! We just don’t want to sink our own money into something that isnt ours, and that we pay rent to have fixed! We have 6 months left and i don’t know if I can stand 6 more days. I am pregnant (3 months along) and am worried about my health, and the baby’s. Also the smells of the mold and dead mice are making me sicker than i should be!
Can anyone help, please?!

How have you been notifying the landlord of these problems? Verbally? If so it’s not good enough to establish a record of in action. You need to send him a letter via certified mail (this will prove that he recieved it) and include pics of all the problems if you can. Include a copy of your lease with the verbage outlining the landlords responsibility for repairs highlighted, include a copy of the section of your state landlord and tenant laws that outline his responsibilities. If there is no response within a week of him recieving it then send him another letter with the same copies of everything and an additional letter informing him that you are going to call the local housing authority if repairs on these items don’t start within (a time limit may be outlined in your state landlord and tenant laws, but if not I would give him 2 weeks.) If he doesn’t start repairs by the time limit follow through and call your local housing authority – there is probably a phone number in the phone book under municipal offices or state offices.
Most likely he’s not even supposed to be renting the place and telling him you’ll call the housing authority will prompt him to action. I’d plan on moving when your lease is up – even though you will be close to giving birth DON’T SIGN ANOTHER LEASE WITH HIM.

I have had my CUSH pillow for over 5 years. It was given to me as a gift when the first came out. I absolutely love this pillow. But recently it has started to loose beads and I have found several holes in it. I can almost not sleep with out it!
I have looked at several places but all the beads inside the pillows are soft microfiber beads. I haven’t found any like the original cush; which had hard beads on the insides. The brand is Cush not mush or cushie. CUSH. I was wondering If anyone knew of a website or a store where I could by a Cush pillow at. If you did please tell me! It would be very helpful in me getting some sleep!
