Best Materials For Quality Custom Cabinets
In the world of custom cabinetry, many questions arise about the types of wood commonly used. Which woods last and which may not wear well over years of hard use are additional questions. In our New York Custom Furniture company, we’ve constructed and installed countless cabinets, wall units and custom radiator covers for clients all over the New York and New England areas. And depending on the customer’s tastes, the design and other unique factors, different materials work well for different situations.
These unique requirements not only contribute to the type of design, but also to the selection of lumber or construction materials. Customers looking to purchase custom cabinetry will find that there are three commonly used materials: Plywood, Veneer and MDF.
Plywood: The construction industry has used plywood as long as the material has been available. Interestingly, plywood is also frequently used in custom cabinetry. Plywood consists of several layers or ‘plies’ of wood attached with glue or resin. Strong, stable and lightweight, this material is extremely useful – especially the cabinet-grade plywood. This grade is uniquely useful for the bottoms, backs and sides of good quality cabinets. Available in a range of thicknesses, plywood is also available in several types of wood. This makes the material particularly useful as cherry plywood might be used with a cherry veneer for the outer portion while a spruce or alder is used in the cabinet interior.
Veneer: Veneer is not a bad thing – Really! Some of the most stunning, highest quality furniture could not be made without it. Real veneer is very thinly sliced wood that is intended to be glued to a substrate such as a secondary wood, plywood or an MDF panel. There are many situations where veneer is a more desirable choice than solid wood. Once glued to an appropriate substrate, veneer is more stable and less susceptible to movement caused by changes in humidity. In addition, veneer allows for exceptional control of both the color and grain of the finished project as well as the possibility to create a range of visual patterns that cannot be achieved any other way. (Think Art Deco. Think Modern.) If used correctly, there is very little chance that the veneer will chip, crack, or separate from its backing.
MDF Also known as “Medium Density Fiberboard,” this material is made up of wood fibers and resins bound together in the manufacturing process by heat and pressure. This material is also a high quality construction material that works quite well for custom cabinetry as well as other forms of furniture construction. Do not confuse MDF with particleboard however. Particleboard is simply a terrible material to use. MDF is smooth and stable and is a great choice for substrate to which a quality veneer can be attached. Or, for panels where lacquer or paint is to be applied, this material will serve the purchaser well. Owing to its consistent surface, this material is not apt to “telegraph” or show through extremely thin veneers. As this material is an engineered wood product, MDF is also available in varieties that are water resistant and can contain recycled and formaldehyde-free resins. As far as “green” construction material goes MDF is a solid option and a quality material for furniture and cabinetry.

Stained Glass Kits 101 – Which Stained Glass Kit Cutter Should I Get?
Stained glass kits are an awesome way to tap into your inner artist. But they don’t work so good if you don’t have a good stained glass cutter.
Here are three tips for making sure you get a cutter that helps you cut properly-and safely-so you’re making the most of your stained glass projects.
Stained Glass Kits Cutter Option No.1: Pen-Shaped
If you don’t have a ton of cash than going with a pen-shaped cutter is the way to go. (These will usually run you about 10-20 dollars.)
Their only drawback is an ergonomic one. Some people find them difficult to grip, especially for older hands like myself. (Good guideline: If your hands get sore writing with a pen-then maybe a pen-shaped glass cutter isn’t right for you.)
Pros/inexpensive; portable
Cons/Can be hard to grip; not the most precise cutter.
Stained Glass Kits Cutter Option No.2: Bring Out Your Six-Shooter
The pistol-shaped glass cutter is the next step up and I’ll be honest this one is my favorite. Most people who really catch the infectious fever that is stained glass art, like the pistol-shaped cutter. It feels fantastic in your hands, and can let you get really precise with your glass scoreline.
Yet they aren’t super cheap. With a pricetag of 20-40 dollars they may be a bit spendier than most people want.
Pros/super ergonomic; good cutting ability.
Cons/Not as cheap as a pen shape.
Stained Glass Kits Cutter Option No.3: Inside the Circle
For the most superior stained glass cuts nothing will beat a circle glass cutter. These are units which you swivel mount onto your work desk and are very easy to use.
Unfortunately you do pay a bit extra for that performance. Also, they do take up a bit space. So they are not ideal for taking to your stained glass kit parties, and require a fair bit of workspace. (Something that not everybody has.)
Pros/ Superior cutting; Simple to use.
Cons/Expensive

How To Design Your Master Bathroom
Decorating a master bathroom can be a lot of fun and a lot of work. Some of the best ideas to decorate your bathroom are often the simple ideas. Trying to decide how to design the bathroom can be difficult for some, so I’ve created this guide to help give you some ideas.
This guide will share with you some tips in making effective and efficient decisions in renovating your bathroom. Some of the ideas to consider are finding the right colors, fixtures and decor for your bathroom. These can all make or break the look your going for!
One of the first things to consider for your master bathroom is how much light is it getting? Is it bright enough? If not, then you should consider making some changes as a bright room will feel bigger and more comfortable.
If you’re bathroom doesn’t get enough light or have bright enough lights, there are some simple ways to change this problem. If you have room for adding mirrors on the wall, this is a great way to have light reflect throughout the room. Recessed lighting is another effective way to brighten the room as they won’t take much space either.
We all wish that space isn’t an issue, but unfortunately we have to be careful with our measurements in the master bathroom. Large appliances are great, but a cramped bathroom isn’t very appealing. However, if you do have the extra space, go for larger appliances. They’re more comfortable and look great.
There’s nothing like a large bathtub to sit back and relax in. If the appliances and fixtures are too big for your space, you’re bathroom will feel too crowded. This will make it unappealing and feeling smaller. Another great option for a large bathroom is a separate shower and separate sinks for him/her.
If you’re trying to figure out what colors to use in your bathroom, go with something light and pale! These types of colors make the room feel more open. Dark colors have the opposite effect. If you want to add something bright, it’s best if you do an accent wall or just some bright fixtures.
I hope this guide has helped you understand some things to consider when renovating your master bathroom. It’s a room you’ll visit everyday, so make sure it’s done exactly how you dream of!
