Soul

Preface

All the days I still remember have been with Soul. I can talk to him, and any other animal I choose. Am I some sort of super hero? Let me know when you’ve figured it out. In my eyes my superhero, my savior, is Soul. You might see a gigantic flesh eating beast to be a monster. I don’t. I see things differently; I seek out the meaning, the purpose of everything.

That one night that the clip was put into my hair, my whole life changed, forever. I was no longer searching for my parents, or how I came to be. I was trying to tie up the loose ends of my heart, the thing that kept me driving to an unreliable source. I found myself wanting nothing but to move like a wolf in the darkness. Invisible and lethal. I wanted to travel large distances in one day to only find myself questioning myself.

The whole time I would grasp hold of something that I thought, kept me going. My necklace, with beads as old as God and the thread woven as if out of pure light. The letters and symbols on the beads are a mystery to yet be unraveled. They are ancient with a language forever forgotten. Even though the necklace was ancient and unreadable, I knew two words without skipping a heartbeat.

Have Hope.

Chapter One

The Shooting Star

A basket dances on the pale, glistening river, pain-filled screams enveloping the night. Gun shots echo in the distance. A cub, with eyes as old and wise as time whines nervously on the banks. A baby, no older than three, sits in the basket, fast asleep.

I sit straight up, gasping for breath. The dream, what did it mean? Who was the baby? What was the cub doing sitting on the banks? Was he waiting for the baby? Why were there gun shots and screams?

My cloudy mourning brain matched my murky eyes. The new mourning sunlight streamed through the cave it bounces off places were the rocks cave in and balance on Soul, his glorious white coat gleaming with unnatural brightness. It was hard to describe such a glorious, frightening creature, when there were no words that could match his soft, reassuring aura.

His huge muscles bulged from his arm, but not making him seem dangerous but protective. His face is a different story. Usually, it’s defensive and unbroken, but after I wake up, when I have nightmares, it was always shattered with concern. His long snout fixed in a hard grimace and his eyes, ever so deep and mysterious, wouldn’t reveal anything until his heart went cold.

It was like this every morning. His worried look painted on his own face and him wanting to go somewhere else but me continuously deigning. I can’t help that I scream in my sleep. I can’t help that dreams haunt me when slip under the surface. It’s an unwanted, unfortunate, gift.

“It was another dream” I whisper to him. I can’t lie to him, his heart of gold fearing for me tirelessly.

“Maybe it’s time for us to move on, go somewhere where you can sleep without having one of your dreams. It almost kills me seeing you scream in your sleep. Please, for me?” Soul’s eyes tell me.

Of course! Now he makes me take a trip down guilt row. He knew just as well as I did that I can’t sleep a dreamless, sleep-filled night even if I tried. It’s impossible. I’m not going to give in, I like it here. The rainy, murky, spring had just left and finally I was able to spend a cool summer where I wanted. I wasn’t about to give that up.

I sigh deeply, letting the memories try to return to me but of course, they don’t. They never do. I can barely remember living here for the past year. It’s peaceful here. The river’s only twenty feet through the woods, and every morning you get to hear it churning up and down the current.

I’m finally content. I don’t have to worry about how much food to portion out because I can just pick the berries. I can go run into the forest and let the animals help me find food. The fish are a plentiful food source, and at long last, I don’t have to worry about starvation.

But most of all, I get to go outside more, I don’t have to be stuck in the dark, rock brown cave. It’s ceiling slowly decimating until it forms a point deep in the base of the cave. The only problem with the cave, is that it isn’t very tall. At first you can stand up but soon you have to crouch and then even crawl. Soul of course has no problem with it. I’m not short; I wish I am so I can walk through the cave!

It sounds like it could develop into a real good story if nurtured just right. I would suggest italicizing the parts spoken by Soul since I got the impression it is more of his thoughts.

Like you said there were grammatical errors but that’s what editing and drafts are for! ^^ I know I don’t worry about grammar till I go back and read my work.

Try to stay away from repetition in words, especially small words. Most readers don’t notice it consciously, but they feel it, and it can cause a loss of interest. There really wasn’t much noticeable repetition here, but I would perhaps change the following:

“I’m finally content. I don’t have to worry about how much food to portion out because I can just pick the berries. I can go run into the forest and let the animals help me find food. The fish are a plentiful food source, and at long last, I don’t have to worry about starvation.”

to:

“Finally, I am content. I don’t have to worry about preserving and portioning out my rations. Here I can pick the berries Straight from the bush. I can run through the forest, allowing the animals to guide me to food. The fish in the river are plentiful, and at long last, I have no fears of starvation.”

But that is just my personal view. Repeating the word food to often could make the reader have a reaction such as: “Okay, we get it. Woot.” and that is not a good reaction.

I like the imagry in the preface, keep that up through the whole story. If a reader can not picture the story in their mind, as if they are watching it on a tiny television in their brain, it is most likely poorly written.

Not saying yours is, I quite like it and would love to continue reading. Perhaps we could even trade manuscipts for peer editing. It is a useful tachnique I rely hevilly upon. If my friends find it boring or unreadable, I can pretty much asume it needs major work. However if they laugh or smile, or get absorbed and ask for more, I know I’m on the right track.

To me you seem to be anywhere from 15 to 25. I say this knowing what a very wide range people can write despite thier age. My initiall though however was that you were around the same age as myself, 17ish. I’ love to know your real age and see if I was even close to in the ballpark.

I have had my CUSH pillow for over 5 years. It was given to me as a gift when the first came out. I absolutely love this pillow. But recently it has started to loose beads and I have found several holes in it. I can almost not sleep with out it!
I have looked at several places but all the beads inside the pillows are soft microfiber beads. I haven’t found any like the original cush; which had hard beads on the insides. The brand is Cush not mush or cushie. CUSH. I was wondering If anyone knew of a website or a store where I could by a Cush pillow at. If you did please tell me!
