The UK has long had a history of holding parties and events that featured the wearing of costumes However, costume parties are just beginning to gain popularity in the United States. What was once reserved for the odd Halloween celebration is becoming more popular for birthday and Christmas parties and charity events. Exactly what is the appeal of costume parties and why are they gaining in popularity?
Most everyday people out there have very normal lives that do not bring about much excitement. They go to work each day and come home to the family, occasionally go on vacations, have picnics, and sometimes in the winter they may even go skiing. Even though all of these activities are great, people are still looking to break from their mold and step into someone else’s shoes. Costume parties can do just that for people while not having to change jobs or families. For a couple hours two times a year a normal person can become a hero or even a villain. Those that are shy can become huge flirts and scholars can pretend as if they are mighty warriors.
Most people do not have the money to take a far away and exotic vacation. But it is not very hard to turn a simple backyard cookout into an adventurous Hawaiian Luau where everyone has to wear grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts. Costume parties are great because with just a small dose of imagination you can become a king or a movie star. The only limitation you have as who you want to portray is your own imagination. Costume parties can turn ordinary parties and simple lives into an event that will be hard to forget.
For some reason, costume parties just seem to add a little extra excitement to any type of get together. People enjoy the novelty and the fun that various costumes inspire. On those occasions when costumes include masks the air of mystery adds a special excitement to almost any event. There is also something inherently romantic about costume parties. Perhaps it is removing oneself from the day to day worries and being transported to a different time and place that holds the appeal. Perhaps, it is simply the sense of adventure that holds the allure for some, while others simply enjoy dressing in a fashion that they admire but is not up to modern day standards.
Each person when they are picking their costumes can explore all the different ways to express their personality. It can give a person the chance to change their status in life from a peasant to a king.
It is simply a unique and fun way to break out of the mold we have chosen for ourselves for a short period of time while in the comfort of friends and people we know and trust. It is a way to embark on an adventure for one short evening.
Quite simply costume parties allow us to escape the reality of life and rub elbows with famous politicians, well known gangsters, exotic women, historical figures and cartoon characters and even larger than life rabbits, frogs and the Yeti of legends.
